North Africa – NODIER (Charles). Journal of the Portes de Fer Expedition. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1844. Large 8vo, (4)-XVI-329-(2) pp., in the publisher’s cardboard binding. First edition and first printing of the illustrations. A folded map of Algeria, approximately 200 woodcut vignettes in the text and 40 woodcut plates printed on Chinese paper, by Raffet, Descamps and Dauzat. Each of these engravings is protected by a border featuring a printed caption. The work, printed in a small number of copies, was intended for members of the royal family, state dignitaries and comrades-in-arms; it was not made available for general sale. A copy entirely untrimmed, free from foxing, in its publisher’s cardboard binding, which has a few defects.
