Description
North Africa – QUESNE (Jacques Salbigoton). A History of Slavery in Africa (spanning thirty-four years) by P. J. Dumont, a native of Paris, now at the Royal Hospice for the Incurables. Paris, Pillet aîné, 1819. 8vo, blue paper board, plain spine, red title label, speckled edges (modern binding). Illustrated with 3 engraved plates (2 portraits and a facsimile of handwriting). Account collected and transcribed by Jacques Salbigoton Quesné, based on interviews he conducted with Pierre-Joseph Dumont. The latter, a young assistant to a naval officer, had been taken prisoner and enslaved in 1782, after a storm caused his ship to run aground on the Algerian coast. He was not freed until 1816, when the British Mediterranean fleet bombarded Algiers and forced the Dey to free more than a thousand slaves. A fine copy. Collector’s stamp on the half-title page.
