Description
Central America – DUPAIX (Guillermo). Mexican Antiquities. An account of three expeditions led by Captain Dupaix in 1805, 1806 and 1807, in search of the antiquities of that country, notably those of Mitla and Palenqué. Paris, Imprimerie Didot, 1834.
Two volumes of text in a single folio volume, and a folio atlas; red half-shagreen, ornately ribbed spine, untrimmed (contemporary binding).
First edition of this seminal work on Mayan monuments.
A rare copy in period colour.
The atlas comprises 165 plates (out of 166) lithographed by Engelmann after Castañeda’s drawings. The following plates are engraved on the same sheet: XLII, XLIII, and XLIV of the second part; I and II, V and VI, VII and VIII of the fifth part.
The title page of the text is trimmed at the top in the margin; there is marginal staining on the first two plates; plate XVI of the first part (Pyramid of Cholula), the frontispiece and the map are missing.
There is damage to the bindings, some foxing on the text, and marginal water damage to certain leaves and plates.
