Description
North America – [SMITH (William)]. A historical account of the expedition against the Ohio Indians in MDCCLXIV, commanded by Chevalier Henry Bouquet, Colonel of the Infantry, and subsequently Brigadier-General in America; containing his dealings with the Indians regarding the release of prisoners and the preliminaries to peace; with an introductory account of the previous campaign of the year 1763, and of the Battle of Bushy Run. Attached are military memoirs containing reflections on the war with the savages; a method for establishing settlements on the frontier; some details concerning the Indians’ territory; together with a list of nations, combatants, towns, distances and various routes. The whole is illustrated with maps and engravings. Translated from the English by C.G.F. Dumas. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1769.
In-8, XVI-148-[10] pp., with 6 engraved plates, including 2 views and 3 maps, and a fold-out marching order; fawn half-calf, ribbed spine, gilt fillets (imitation binding).
First French translation of *Historical Account of Bouquet’s Expedition against the Ohio Indians*, based on the 1766 London edition (the second). It provides very interesting information on the Indian wars following the Seven Years’ War, as well as on the figure of Henry-Louis Bouquet (1715–1765).
