Description
North America – DIEREVILLE. An account of a voyage from Port Royal in Acadia, or New France, providing a detailed description of the various sea conditions encountered on a long-distance crossing, a description of the country, the occupations of the French settled there, the customs of the various indigenous peoples, their superstitions and their hunting practices; with a detailed treatise on the beaver (...). Following the Account, a detailed account has been added of a battle fought by the French and the Acadians against the English. Rouen, Jean-Baptiste Besongne, 1708. In-12, [6] ff., 7–236 pp., [1] f. of approval, grained sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). A small tear to the top cap and the mouthpiece; scuff marks on the back cover. First edition of this extremely rare account, originally composed in verse, then interspersed with an explanatory prose text to make it more ‘accessible’. This first edition was published in three slightly different versions. There is another early printing dated 1710, which is more commonly found, followed by reprints from the 19th and 20th centuries (1885 and 1933). This copy is complete with the supplement recounting the attack on Port-Royal by the English from New England, which should be found in the third edition, but it is bound at the beginning of the work (after the dedication to Bégon), whereas it is normally placed at the end of the text. Sent to Acadia as a surgeon, Diéréville set sail from La Rochelle on 20 August 1699 and remained at Port-Royal from 13 October 1699 to 6 October 1700; he was particularly interested in the district’s flora and fauna. His observations on Native American customs are often delightful. Sabin 20128. Gagnon, 1134 (for the 1710 edition). Toronto Public Library, Bibliography of Canadiana, 125 (1710 edition).
