Quarto, comprising [1] engraved title page and 19 plates of costumes, engraved in stippling and carefully watercoloured in the period. Brown period cardboard binding, spine repaired, engraved title label glued to the upper cover. An indigenous depiction of the costumes of the Inca and his Queen; A lady of Lima in her full dress; A male inhabitant of Lima from the middle class; A woman of Lima from the middle class; Indigenous men and women in festive dress; A female domestic servant of Lima from the quarteron class; Two female domestic servants from Lima, natives who have adopted Spanish dress; a civilised Indian wearing the poncho; the Virgin of the Sun; a Mestizo from Quito practising a liberal art, accompanied by his pupil; Mulattos from Quito; a female Indian dressed as the Minerva of Peru; A female warrior of the Yurimagua tribe; an Indian warrior belonging to a barbarous tribe; a fighter at a bull festival; a Bozal, or ‘raw Negro’, residing in the district of Lima; an Indian woman from a village near Lima; an overseer of a Royal Peruvian mine; llamas or Peruvian sheep. A very rare series of plates depicting Peruvian costumes, published as a separate print based on Joseph Skinner’s work *The Present State of Peru…*, London, Richard Philipps, 1805. An identical set was published by Wallis and Edington in 1816. (6 copies in public collections, mainly in the United States).
