Description
South America – CHEVALIER de SAINT-ROBERT (Marcel). General Rosas and the Question of the Plata. Paris, Gerdès, 1848. In-8, 79 pp.; black half-shagreen, smooth spine, ‘Plata’ embossed in gold on the spine (contemporary binding). First edition. A brief history of the provinces of the Río de la Plata from the 1810 revolution to the present day, intended to give European readers a better understanding of the current situation in the region and the reign of Juan Manuel de Rosas. An Argentine politician and military leader, Rosas served as governor of the province of Buenos Aires and was the de facto leader of the Argentine Confederation from 1835 to 1852. From 1845 onwards, France and Great Britain jointly attempted to thwart the expansionist ambitions of Rosas’s Argentina by imposing a blockade of the Río de la Plata. The aim was to prevent any commercial vessel from accessing the ports of Argentina and Uruguay, with the exception of Montevideo. Ultimately, Britain in 1849 and France in 1850 recognised Argentine sovereignty over its internal waters. A fine copy. Autograph dispatch to Mr Herbert, Councillor of State, Minister Plenipotentiary, and Director of Foreign Affairs.
