In-8, green shagreen, decorated ribbed spine, bordered with fillets and small gilded corner fleurons on the covers, gilt edges, gilt inner edge (contemporary binding). First edition, illustrated with 21 woodcuts (separate from the text) and 2 maps, documenting the journey of Count Alexis de Gabriac, a diplomat in the service of France, who undertook a long journey in 1866–1867 through New Granada (Colombia), Ecuador, Peru and Brazil. His account combines descriptions of landscapes, ethnographic observations, political and economic considerations, as well as valuable information on transport routes and the Amazon basin. It constitutes a first-rate account of South America at a time when these regions were still little known to European travellers. “A work brimming with interesting and curious observations on the indigenous peoples, their customs, traditions, music, etc. It also contains notated melodies of birdsong from the Amazon rainforest.” JM.
