South America – GARCILASSO DE LA VEGA (Gómez Suárez de Figueroa). History of the Incas, Kings of Peru. Amsterdam, Jean Frédéric Bernard, 1737. 2 quarto volumes of (20) folios, 540 pp.–(8) folios — (2) folios, xxiv–373–(3) pp.; havana calfskin, ornate ribbed spine, ornate edges, speckled edges (contemporary binding). New edition containing *The History of the Incas*, translated from the Spanish by Jean Baudouin; followed by *The History of the Conquest of Florida*, by the same author, translated by Pierre Richelet, to which is appended *The New Discovery of a Country Larger than Europe, Situated in America between New Mexico and the Arctic Ocean*, by Father Louis Hennepin. The illustrations consist of a frontispiece, 5 vignettes (title and running head), 3 engraved fold-out maps (Peru, Louisiana and the course of the Mississippi), and 15 engraved plates (including one fold-out), most by Bernard Picart. The son of a Spanish conquistador and an Inca princess, Garcilasso de la Vega was born and lived in Cuzco, Chile, until his father’s death. Then, at the age of 21, he left the Americas to settle in Spain, where he wrote *A History of the Incas*, a unique account by a man who straddled both cultures and presented a less European perspective on this history. The second text, *The History of the Conquest of Florida*, recounts the story of Hernando de Soto’s expedition through the south-eastern United States in search of gold and a passage to the ‘South Sea’ and China. Having set out from Havana in 1539, the expedition reached the banks of the Mississippi in May 1541. Soto died a year later, and what remained of the expedition returned to Mexico City without having discovered any treasure or even suitable sites on which to establish a colony. The final text is by Father Hennepin, who, in 1678, accompanied Cavelier de La Salle to the Great Lakes region and then continued, without him, to explore the northern part of the Mississippi basin, which he travelled down, he claimed, to its mouth (though he was accused of fraud on this point). A fine copy. Ex-libris engraved with the coat of arms of Charles, Earl of Ailesbury. Skilful restoration work.
