Asia – GONZALEZ DE SAN PEDRO (Francesco). Account of the recent persecution in China, up to the death of Cardinal de Tournon: compiled (...) from a more detailed account by the missionaries of the same Order [the Dominicans], who were expelled from China. Sl, 1714. In-12, XVI-392 pp., [6] half-leaves of endpapers, marbled fawn calfskin, plain spine with decoration, red title page, red edges (late 18th-century binding). A few scuffs and stamps, but a good copy. Second French edition (the first appeared in 1712), based on an Italian translation of the original Spanish text. This work presents the Dominicans’ perspective on the Chinese Rites Controversy, a debate most commonly known through the writings of the Jesuits or the Foreign Missions. In contrast to the latter, missionaries from other religious orders generally condemned the policy of inculturation pursued in China, refusing to regard the ‘Chinese rites’ as mere civil practices.
