First French edition, translated from the English by Jean-Baptiste Suard, and illustrated with an engraved frontispiece.
An account of Byron’s second voyage round the world. He undertook his first voyage with Admiral George Anson. During this second voyage, he visited the Falkland Islands, crossed the Strait of Magellan, and called at the Juan Fernández and Tuamotu archipelagos. The account of this voyage was written by one of his officers, Philip Carteret.
The 68 pages of the preface are devoted to demonstrating the existence of giants on the Patagonian coast, based on the accounts of travellers who had encountered them, from Pigafetta to Byron.
