DIBDIN (Thomas Frognall). A Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour of France and Germany. London, printed for the author by W. Bulmer & W. Nicol; sold by Payne & Foss, Longman, Hurst, J. & A. Arch, R. H. Evans, R. Triphook, and John Major; Paris, sold by Treuttel & Wurtz, 1821.
3 vols. large 8vo, fawn morocco, spine with faux raised bands decorated with gilt fillets and garlands, double gilt fillet framing with corner fleurons on the covers, gilt edges, double gilt fillet framing on the half-bonds (R. Rivière). Top corners and head bands rubbed, spine slightly sun-faded.
First edition of this famous bibliographical travelogue by Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776–1847). Commissioned in 1821 by Lord Spencer to acquire rare editions on the continent, the English bibliophile provides a valuable account of the great European libraries and the treasures they contained. Despite its significance, the work was never fully translated into French.
