Description
DU RYER (André). The Koran of Muhammad. The Hague, Adrian Moetjens, 1683. Small 12mo, (5) folios, 486-(4) pages; havana calfskin, decorated raised spine, decorated edges, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. A new edition of the translation by André Du Ryer, a diplomat in Constantinople, French consul in Alexandria, and subsequently Louis XIII’s secretary-interpreter for Oriental languages. Published in 1647, his translation of the Qur’an was the first into French. Du Ryer was fluent in Turkish and Arabic and spent most of his life on extended journeys, undertaken probably in the interests of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, of which he was a knight. A fine copy. Ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of Henry Standish.
