Description
FROGER (François). An account of a voyage undertaken in 1695, 1696 and 1697 to the coasts of Africa, the Strait of Magellan, Brazil, Cayenne and the West Indies, by a squadron of the King’s ships, commanded by M. de Gennes. Paris, 1698. In-12, (6) folios, 219-(1) pp.; havana calf, decorated ribbed spine, red morocco title label, red edges (contemporary binding). The work is illustrated with a frontispiece and 29 engraved plates: 12 maps or plans, including 5 fold-out maps, and 17 figures (botany, natural history and views, including two fold-out panoramas of Brazil depicting the cities of San Salvador and San Sebastian). A young hydrographic engineer, Froger embarked at the age of 19 on one of the ships in the squadron commanded by Captain de Gennes. This expedition was intended to sail along the coast of Africa, reach the coast of Brazil and enter the Pacific, then sail up the coast of Peru to either capture Spanish ships or seize the gold mines. However, having set sail from La Rochelle in 1695, the expedition failed to pass through the Strait of Magellan and instead proceeded to Cayenne, Suriname and the Caribbean. A fine copy. An ex-libris engraved with the coat of arms of the Maridor family is pasted onto the title page.
