Description
Great Britain – NORTH (Charles Niveu Mclntyre). Leabhar Comunn nam fior Ghael. The Book of the Club of True Highlanders. London, Smythson, [1892]. 2 folio volumes (41.5 x 32.8 cm) comprising 3 unnumbered folios, XI pp., 59 pp.; 1 unnumbered folio, 53 pp., 6 unnumbered pp.; Bradel binding in blue and green tartan, black title labels, gilt edges (modern bindings). A rare collection, illustrated with 70 plates depicting numerous Celtic artefacts from the Highlands: costumes, jewellery, works of art, utensils, symbols, weapons, musical instruments, sheet music, etc. The title pages are in Gaelic and English. Charles Niveu Mclntyre North (1839–1899) was an architect in Southwart. Passionate about Scottish history, he had a house built for himself at Brockley Park in the style of a Scottish castle. The endpapers are old and browned; there are a few rare foxing spots, but otherwise this is a fine copy bound in Scottish tartan.
