Paris, Hocquart, Audin and Belin, 1806. 2 vols. in-4, pale calfskin, smooth spine with decoration, title and volume number labels, gilt scrolls framing the covers, gilt scrolls on the inside, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Third edition of this famous work, written by the diplomat, traveller and artist Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757–1810), providing descriptions of the various peoples known at the time. The illustrations comprise 1 frontispiece (out of 4), 6 double-page maps and 124 (out of 156) separate plates, all finely coloured at the time. Most of the engravings depict a man and a woman from the various peoples described. A few text leaves printed on bluish paper. The cap of vol. 1 is partially torn off, corners are worn, there are stains on the covers; the first volume has suffered damage at the hands of a careless young reader (several leaves and plates missing, tears, traces of coloured pencils or paint affecting around fifteen plates), slight marginal water stain at the end of vol. 1, a few scattered foxing spots on both volumes. (Colas I, 1302.)
