Description
[Mauritius] – MATOU (pseudonym of Petit d’Hauterive). Wasps of Mauritius. Paris, Henri Plon, 1861. In-8, (3) folios, 354 pp.; green percaline with blind-stamped design, title on the front cover, gilt edges (publisher’s binding). First and only early edition. A collection of 53 chronicles on the social and cultural life of Mauritius, written between July 1858 and May 1861, the date of the author’s departure. A fine copy bearing a label stating: ‘Book from the library of the three-masted ship Alphonse, commissioned by my grandfather Henry Maugat, of Paimboeuf’. There is also an autograph dedication: ‘In friendly remembrance. Marius Arnault, Tamatave, 14 August 1862’. Slight foxing, worn corners, front cover faded.
