Italy – [BODONI] – PACIAUDI (P. M.). Description of the festivities held in Parma in the year 1769 to mark the august marriage of His Royal Highness the Infante Don Ferdinando to Her Royal Highness the Archduchess Maria Amalia. Parma, Giambattista Bodoni, 1769. Large folio, marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding, worn). Half-title page, frontispiece (printed title missing), 76 leaves of text in Italian and French, 5 headbands, 8 initials and 19 tailpieces, 33 out of 36 engraved plates, some of which are fold-out. Total print run of the edition estimated at 1,002 copies; this is one of the 144 bearing the gilded Bourbon-Parma coat of arms on the covers. This is the only edition of the commemorative book of festivities printed by Giambattista Bodoni to mark the Duke’s marriage to Marie-Amélie (1746–1804), Archduchess of Austria, in 1769. The various festivities marking the union, illustrated and described here with great care, included tournaments, masked balls, a spectacular fireworks display, a pastoral play and a Chinese fair. Several plates focus in particular on the guests and their attire; the coats of arms of certain participants are also depicted. These lavish celebrations were designed by Ennemond Petitot (1727–1801), the duchy’s chief architect. A fine example bearing the coat of arms of Duke Ferdinand I of Bourbon-Parma (1751–1802), stamped in the centre of each of the two covers and on his furniture in the centre of each of the compartments on the spine.
