Description
Italy – BARTOLI (Sebastiano). Breve ragguaglio de'bagni di Pozzuolo, dispersi, investigati per ordine dell'Eccmo Signore D. Pietro Antonio d'Aragonia, vicere, e ritrovati. Naples, Roncagliolo, 1667.
In-8, [8] leaves, followed by numbered pp. 9–76, marbled pale yellow paper board binding, plain spine, green title page (19th-century binding).
The collation corresponds to the copy in the Mazarine Library: the main text is preceded by Ferrante Loffredo’s treatise entitled *Le Antichità du Pozzuolo, et luoghi convicini* (pp. 9–36; this is a reprint of a short work originally published in 1570); and the first 8 folios are unnumbered (there is nothing between the dedication and Loffredo’s text).
A very rare monograph on the discovery of the baths at Pozzuoli (Puteoli in Latin; Pouzzoles in French): this ancient city near Naples owed its name to the numerous volcanic springs which, since antiquity, had been renowned for their healing properties.
A fine copy from the library of the Dukes of Luynes (ex-libris).
