Italy – COCHIN (Charles Nicolas) & BELLICARD (Jérôme Charles). Observations on the antiquities of the city of Herculaneum, with some reflections on the painting and sculpture of the ancients, & a brief description of certain antiquities in the vicinity of Naples. Paris, Jombert, 1754. In-12, red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt inner wheel, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition, illustrated with 40 plates, including 6 fold-outs. The site of Herculaneum was the subject of archaeological excavations from 1738 onwards. This extraordinary event had a profound impact throughout Europe and transformed the contemporary view of Roman antiquity. The book contains a history of the city and the location of the volcano, observations on the antiquities found during the excavations, an essay on the paintings and sculptures unearthed, and a description of some antiquities discovered in the Naples region. During their journey through Italy, Charles Nicolas Cochin, an engraver, and Bellicard, an architect, visited Naples in 1750 and marvelled at the site of Herculaneum and its excavations.
