Japan – BIGOT (Georges). Japanese Sketches. Tokyo, n.p., 1886. Folio, Japanese-style paperback, illustrated cover. 31 original etchings, including 2 on the covers. Slight pinholes and scattered foxing. Georges Bigot (1860–1927), a French painter, illustrator and caricaturist, lived in Japan for 17 years during the Meiji era. Having arrived in Japan in 1882, he adapted very quickly to the Japanese way of life and soon secured a post as a teacher of Western-style drawing at the Army School, before going on to teach French. Experiencing first-hand Japan’s rapid Westernisation at the start of the Meiji era (1868–1912), he observed this vibrant society and published caricatures and satirical periodicals. Bigot rejected the idealised vision of a Japan marching towards modernity, coming into conflict with the increasingly nationalistic Japanese government. His publications were eventually banned from sale from 1900 onwards, whilst in France he was simply forgotten. The numerous albums of caricatures and various periodicals he left behind would, many years later, earn him recognition as the ‘caricaturist of the Meiji era’. He is regarded by the younger generation of manga artists as the father of the genre.
