Description
LA HARPE (Jean-François de). A Summary of the General History of Travels, containing the most remarkable, useful and well-established facts concerning the countries explored by travellers; the customs of the inhabitants, religion, traditions, arts and sciences, trade and industry, enriched with maps and illustrations. Paris, Hôtel de Thou, Laporte, Moutardier, 1780–Year IX (1801). 32 volumes of text in 8vo and an atlas in 4to; fawn half-calf, spine with decorated raised bands, title and volume number labels in red and green morocco, initials at the tail, yellow edges (contemporary binding). The illustrations are very comprehensive, including the fold-out chart of the various languages of the South Sea (vol. 21), a fold-out leaflet (Latin inscription left in Quito by members of the Academy of Sciences (Godin, Bouguer, La Condamine), with a translation on the reverse. vol. 13), the 4 engraved and folded maps (3 of which have been bound into the atlas), and the 101 engraved plates (views, costumes, genre scenes). The atlas contains 74 engraved maps of North America, Brazil, China, Japan, the Philippines, Oceania and various African and Asian countries. This work by La Harpe, continued by Delpuech-Comeiras for the final nine volumes, is an abridged version of Abbé Prévost’s comprehensive *Histoire des Voyages*, published between 1747 and 1780. It contains accounts of the voyages of Captain Cook, as well as those of Dampier, Carteret, Kaempfer, Bernier, Bruce, Norden, Anson, Bougainville, and many others, thus bringing together a wealth of information on the history, manners and customs of the inhabitants of the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania. A very fine copy in uniform binding, bearing the letter C on the spine. The cap is damaged, and there are small foxing spots on some pages (particularly in volume 5).
