The Middle East – HAMMER-PURGSTALL (Joseph von). History of the Ottoman Empire from its origins to the present day. A work drawn from the most reliable sources and based on documents and manuscripts, most of which are unknown in Europe; translated from the German, with notes and under the supervision of the author, by J.-J. Helert; accompanied by a comparative atlas of the Ottoman Empire, containing 21 maps and 15 battle plans drawn up by the translator. Paris, Bellizard, Barthès, Dufour and Lowell; London, Bossange, Barthès and Lowell; Saint Petersburg, Fd. Bellizard, 1835–1843. 18 vols. of text in-8; one vol. folio-sized atlas volume, fawn half-basane, smooth, decorated spines (Lebrun). Spines uniformly sun-faded. The only complete French translation of the monumental *Geschichte des Osmanischen Reiches*, published in Vienna from 1827 to 1835 in ten volumes. An Austrian diplomat and orientalist, Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (1774–1856) was one of the founders of scientific orientalism. Drawing on his remarkable mastery of Oriental languages and original sources gathered during his travels in the East, he profoundly revitalised the critical study of the history of the Ottoman Empire.
