The Middle East – VOLNEY (Constantin François de Chasseboeuf, Count of). A Journey to Syria and Egypt in the Years 1783, 84 and 85. Paris, Dugour & Durand, Year VII [1799]. 2 vols., in-8, red Bradel cardboard binding, spine with gold threading, title and volume number in gold (contemporary binding). 4 fold-out maps and plans, 4 out-of-text plates and a folded table summarising Marseille’s exports and imports to the Levant and Barbary during the year 1784. This third edition (first edition: 1789) is in fact a new edition, as Volney had revised and expanded his text, and added new plates. This famous work was the bedside reading of the generals and scholars of the Egyptian expedition. A very fine copy.
