Quarto, comprising XII pp., (2) ff., 206 pp., (1) f.; marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, green morocco title label, gilt fillets framing the covers, marbled edges (contemporary binding).
First edition.
It is illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 118 engraved plates based on the author’s drawings, depicting plants and birds. Plates 90 and 91 form a single plate.
A French naturalist and traveller, Pierre Sonnerat took part in the expedition of the royal flute L’Isle de France and the corvette Le Nécessaire, whose mission was to study the flora and fauna of the Philippines and New Guinea.
He studied the customs of the Papuans and made numerous scientific observations on the various islands he visited. From his voyage, he brought back cocoa, the breadfruit tree and the mango tree, which he introduced to the colonies.
