Description
PRICHARD (James Cowles). The Natural History of Man [...] Translated from the English by Dr F. ROULIN [...] Paris, Baillière, 1843.
2 volumes, in-8, Bradel-style binding in green percaline, decorated spine, title and volume number in gold (publisher’s binding). The illustrations comprise 40 engraved plates (on 39 sheets), 35 of which are richly coloured, and 90 woodcut figures within the text. Ex-libris J.M.
A few foxing spots; slight water stain at the end of the second volume. Some wear to the back cover of the second volume.
First French translation of *Natural History of Man* (1843). Its illustrations are more extensive than those in the original, which comprises only 26 coloured plates.
A doctor who specialised early on in the field of psychiatry, James Cowles Prichard (1786–1848) also took a keen interest in the then-fledgling discipline of anthropology. From the outset, he advocated the fundamental unity of the human race, a view that was still under debate at the time.
