Russia – [DADLEY (John) & ALEXANDER (William)]. Costume of the Russian Empire. London, Bensley for Stockdale, 1810. Folio (36.6 x 26 cm), midnight blue long-grain morocco, embossed spine, gilded title and publication details, wide frame comprising a gilded frieze, a scroll of palmettes and a fillet with cold-stamped corner fleurons on the covers, inner fillet, gilded edges, restored binding (contemporary English binding). Second edition of this superb collection of Russian costumes, first published in 1803. Frontispiece, 72 separate engravings in stippling and coloured, depicting the traditional costumes of the various nationalities of the Russian Empire. The plates, numbered from 1 to 70 with a number 5* and a number 20*, still bear Harding’s address and the date 1803. The bilingual French-English commentary is by William Alexander. According to Colas, most of these plates are inspired by the collections of Johann-Gottlieb Georgi (1729–1802) published in the last third of the 18th century. He also notes that ‘the printing quality of the plates in this second edition appears to be as good as in the first’. English heraldic bookplate ‘T. W. Tottie’. A copy with very fresh colours, in an English binding of the period. (Colas, no. 704; Vinet, no. 2321).
