Description
Russia – DRU (Léon). Franco-Russian Civil Society for the Study of the Don–Volga Canal. Proposed canal between the Don and the Volga; Report in support of the project. Paris, Georges Chamerot, 1886. Folio, [6]–162 pp., with illustrations within the text and 7 plates, including 4 fold-out colour maps, blue Bradel-style percaline, decorated spine (contemporary binding). A very rare volume, presumably printed in a small run for the French and Russian planners of the project. This is the report of the fact-finding mission commissioned by Alexander III to resume Peter the Great’s attempts to cut a canal between the Don and the Volga, and to explore its ‘feasibility’, as we would say today. A single copy held at the CCF (Grenoble). A copy belonging to Cauvet, Director of the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, with an autograph dedication by the author on the front endpapers.
