Russia – LACOMBE (Jacques). History of the Revolutions of the Russian Empire. Paris, Hérissant, 1760. In-12, marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red title label, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this history of Russia, covering the period from 976 to 1743, by Jacques Lacombe (1724–1811), a lawyer, bookseller and later journalist, and owner of the *Mercure de France*. He was the author of several works on the states of Northern Europe. A fine copy. A small tear with a loss at the lower corner of the title page. Handwritten bookplate from the library of the Château de L’Isle-de-Noé, signed by the Comte de Noé, most likely Louis-Pantaléon de Noé (1728–1816), owner of a plantation and slaves in Saint-Domingue (he is said to have freed Toussaint-Louverture himself, with whom he maintained regular contact).
