Description
Cap-Français. [Signed document concerning the Sacquenville estate]. Le Cap, 4 March 1769. Folio manuscript (37.2 x 22.8 cm) comprising (12) pages; bound in cloth, with green silk ribbons, and a red wax seal on the final page. The correction of an error in the accounts of a plantation. As owners of a sugar plantation situated in the parish of L’Acul, approximately 10 km south-west of Cap-Français (now Cap-Haïtien), the Sacquenville heirs, who resided in France, had entrusted the firm of Auger, Andrieux and Co., merchants in Cap-Français, with the management and administration of their agricultural estate. The firm managed the plantation themselves before entrusting its management to a merchant named Duplessis. When the management contract expired, the managers were required to render accounts. It was then discovered that an error had been made: a sum intended to reimburse operating expenses incurred by the refiner Boissou had been recorded twice by the manager Duplessis, resulting in an overpayment of more than 9,200 livres. Following the discovery of this double entry, the Sacquenville heirs obtained reimbursement of the debt from Duplessis’s estate, represented by his executor. This document, of which this is an authenticated copy, is signed by Grimperel and Pertuis, notaries of the King at Cap-Français, and countersigned by Esteve, seneschal and civil and criminal judge at the royal court of Cap-Français. On the final page is the seal bearing the arms of France of the royal jurisdiction of Cap-Français.
