Description
CHANVALLON (Jean-Baptiste-Thibauld de). A Journey to Martinique, containing various observations on the physics, natural history, agriculture, customs and practices of that island, made in 1751 and in subsequent years. Paris, Cl. J. B. Bauche, 1763. Quarto, comprising (4) folios, viij–192 pp.–(40) folios (46 supplementary pages following page 135); fawn half-calf, decorated ribbed spine, red edges (imitation binding). First edition, illustrated with a folding engraved map of Martinique. Appointed a member of the High Council of Martinique in 1751, Thibauld de Chanvallon was tasked with compiling statistics on the island, a project on which he worked for five years. The account of his journey is followed by numerous observations on the weather, the topography and the customs of the inhabitants. His work also contains fascinating information on the Carib Indians, gathered from those who were still living in Martinique. A good copy. A minor defect on pages 63–64 with the loss of a few letters.
