Description
[Slavery]. Condorcet (Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat, Marquis de). Original lithograph (50 x 32 cm) by Nicolas-Eustache Maurin, published by François Séraphin Delpech, and accompanied by a facsimile of a handwritten note signed by Malouet. [Paris], [Delpech], [1832]. Portrait of one of the founders of the Society of Friends of the Black People. He was the author of a work entitled *Reflections on the Slavery of Black People*, published in 1788, in which he condemned slavery as a crime but also denounced its economic futility. He advocated a phased abolition, as the sudden emancipation of slaves could lead to widespread unrest. A fine copy.
