Description
[Slavery]. General report on the results of the welfare of slaves in the French colonies. Printed by order of the Minister of State for the Navy and the Colonies. Paris, Royal Printing Office, June 1844. Square quarto, [2] leaves, 668 pp., red half-calf, plain spine with decoration, speckled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the third and final report on the implementation of the Royal Ordinance of 5 January 1840, which established a transitional status in the French colonies in preparation for the emancipation of slaves. Conducted in Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Bourbon Island, this survey provides essential insight into a little-known stage in the abolition of slavery, which was quickly overshadowed by the decree of 1848. (Sabin, 14 712.) A very fine copy.
