Description
FORBIN D’OPPEDE (Sextius de). Explanatory note on the Martinique affair. No place, [c. 1820]. Manuscript in-4 (24.8 x 19.5 cm) comprising (7) pp. on 2 double leaves, with a few erasures and corrections. The liquidation of the Count de Peynier’s estates in Martinique. Drafted by one of the family’s heirs, this memorandum first sets out the history of the estates: ‘Baron d’Arros, a native of Béarn, having served his entire life as a naval officer, married in 1764 a very wealthy heiress from Martinique named Mlle de Lahaye, who owned there a very substantial sugar plantation bearing her name, near Saint-Pierre, in the parish of Case-Pilote. A few years later, whilst on a mission to Martinique, Mr d’Arros acquired a second plantation adjoining the first, known as Les Pitons… ’ (p. 1). The two estates subsequently passed to his son-in-law, the Count de Thomassin de Peynier, governor of Saint-Domingue at the time of the Revolution. Burdened with debt, they were sold towards the end of 1809, shortly before the Count’s death, to a merchant from Saint-Pierre named Clauzel. There is then mention of the difficulties encountered during their liquidation (further details available on request.)
