LEYRITZ (Charles de). Set of 2 handwritten letters concerning the Fond Lahaye estate in Martinique. - Signed letter. [Fort-Royal], 15 February 1843. In-4 (27.1 x 20.7 cm), (17) pp.; paperback. The debts of the Fond Lahaye plantation in Martinique. An important letter relating to the Fond Lahaye sugar plantation (Martinique), sold in 1810 by the heirs of the Count of Peynier to Michel Benoît Clauzel, who never paid the full purchase price. Drafted by the notary Charles de Leyritz, it traces nearly thirty years of legal proceedings between the Peynier heirs and the Clauzel heirs: unpaid debts, sales at auction, appeals, the seizure of the plantation, payments in sugar and disputes over the estate. It provides a particularly illuminating account of the difficulties involved in recovering colonial debts and of the legal and economic management of a large Martinican plantation, highlighting in particular the fate of the slaves included among the disputed assets. - Signed autograph letter. Following the default of the purchaser, Michel Benoît Clauzel, the property was the subject of protracted proceedings relating to a failed auction. The notary Charles de Leyritz explains the cancellation of the 1841 sale to Louis de Percin de Montgaillard, who was unable to pay the price, and details the disputes between the Peynier and Clauzel heirs concerning a substantial debt, disputed payments and the removal of thirteen slaves from the plantation.
