Description
MENARD (Jean). Memorandum for Mr Bastin. Signed autograph document. Saint-Pierre, 11 April 1778. 1 folio page (32.7 x 21.3 cm); crease marks. An order for silverware placed by a Martinican merchant. This memorandum summarises the various items ordered from Paris (details available on request). Jean Ninot Ménard, a goldsmith and hallmark inspector in Saint-Pierre (Martinique), was a partner of Guillaume Costet. In 1784, they purchased a house in Saint-Pierre, situated on Rue Longchamp and Rue Miral, for the sum of 22,500 livres (source: Jacques Guérout, ‘Sale in 1784 of a house in Saint-Pierre, Martinique’, in ‘Généalogie et histoire de la Caraïbe’, May 2022). The recipient of this memorandum is probably Jean Nicolas Bastin, who was admitted as a master goldsmith in Paris in 1774. Notarial inventory reference in the middle of the page: ‘Soixante sixe invée quatorze’. A rare document on goldsmithing in Martinique in the 18th century.
