Description
Saint-Domingue. [Letter on the situation in Saint-Domingue]. Saint-Marc, 28 July 1790.
4 pp. in-4 (24.2 x 18.5 cm) on a double sheet.
The latest deliberations of the Assembly of Saint-Marc.
An interesting letter concerning the latest debates of the Assembly of Saint-Marc (24 July 1790), established at the start of the Revolution in Saint-Domingue. The correspondent reports on a particularly heated session triggered by the arrest of a patriotic soldier, which the deputies denounced as an infringement of individual liberty. The Assembly ordered his release, dismissed Captain Romillon – a loyal supporter of Governor de Peynier – and attempted to take control of the powder magazine by mobilising volunteers. This account illustrates the intense political tensions that pitted the Assembly against the colonial authorities shortly before its dissolution on 30 July 1790.
