Description
Saint-Domingue. Response by the deputies representing French manufacturing and commerce to the motions put forward by Messrs de Cocherel and Reynaud, deputies from the island of Saint-Domingue to the National Assembly. Versailles, Ph.-D. Pierres, [1789]. In-8, 55 pp.; Bradel-style marbled paper binding with a red title label (modern binding). In response to several pamphlets by deputies from Saint-Domingue criticising the price of wheat, a group of merchants from various French ports refutes their claims point by point and seeks to demonstrate that there is no shortage, let alone famine, in the said colony. “It is not true that the supply of French flour to the colony of Saint-Domingue is insufficient, nor that this is the cause of 10 to 12 thousand Black people starving to death every year”. A fine copy.
