SIMOND, HANKEY & Sons. Signed letter to Mr Mérot, eldest son, in Jersey. London, 25 November 1796. 3 pp. ¼ in-4 (22.8 x 18.2 cm) on a double sheet, in French. The replacement of the manager of the Mérot plantation in Saint-Domingue. Originally from Nantes, the Mérot family owned a sugar plantation at Boucassin, in the parish of Arcahaye, north of Port-au-Prince. At the time of the Revolution, part of the family emigrated to England and continued to oversee their affairs in Saint-Domingue through the firm of Simond, Hankey and Sons of London, the authors of this letter. (Details available on request.) The addressee of the letter is probably Jean Mérot (1754–1843), who entrusted the management of his estates in Saint-Domingue to the de La Tullaye family. He was the brother of François Mérot du Barré (1761–1843), one of whose sons, Edouard, was born in London in 1796. On his return to France in 1802, François became a tobacco and gunpowder warehouse keeper in Nantes (source: Loire-Atlantique Departmental Archives). The firm Simond, Hankey and Sons (or Simond, Hankey and Co.) was a newly established bank which granted numerous loans to refugees from the West Indies.
