Description
SOBRY (Jean-François). On Colonisation. Chapter 25 or 35 of a treatise entitled: *The Politics of Common Sense*. Paris, P. Dufart, 1819. In-8, 23 pp.; copper-marbled paper board, with a brown title label (modern binding). The only edition of this rare little treatise. A police commissioner in Paris, the author protests against the French practice of sending convicts into exile in the colonies: ‘Governments […] have no right to create populations of criminals. They have no right to send such a rabble of people away from their own country. They must bear with, restrain and confine their own criminals, and are not entitled to offload them onto the rest of the world. This method of colonisation is such a blatant violation of international law …” (page 10). A fine copy. Pinholes. Not listed in the main bibliographies.
