Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. – [TARADEAU (Antoine-Henri de Commandaire de)]. Expedition to Newfoundland in 1762. Historical journal by Monsieur de Lisle, a colonial officer aboard the King’s frigate *La Licorne*. No place, no date. In-4, [6] folios, including the title page, written in very fine, legible hand (approximately 55 lines per page), one blank folio, loose-leaf, sewn. Title page slightly soiled. A highly interesting, previously unpublished account of a naval episode from the Seven Years’ War – the 1762 Newfoundland campaign – written by Ensign Commandaire de Taradeau, a direct witness to the Chevalier de Ternay’s expedition against the British settlements. After recounting the capture of St John’s, the destruction of the English fishing grounds and the French retreat following the Battle of Signal Hill, the author offers a remarkably candid assessment of the operations, denouncing the errors of the French command whilst paying tribute to the valour of the British.
