O’BRIEN (Donat Henchy). The Story of Captain O’Brien, containing an account of his shipwrecks, his captivity and his escape from France, after enduring a long series of misfortunes over a period of five years. Translated from the English by M. A. R.*** Paris, published by Delaunay, Mongie, 1828.
In-8, fawn half-calf, richly decorated ribbed spine, gilt title (contemporary binding).
First French edition, illustrated with two en-plaque engravings by C. Girardet (including the frontispiece depicting two ships caught in a storm). A few small foxing spots. A fine copy. (Polak, no. 7126.)
The author was a British naval officer who was shipwrecked off Brest on the island of Sein in 1804 and was taken prisoner by the imperial authorities before escaping and spending five years travelling through France, Germany and Austria.
