Light-coloured calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with gilt fleurons in the spandrels, gilt edges (contemporary binding).
Beautiful frontispiece engraved by Ertinger and 8 fold-out plates. First edition dedicated to the Count of Maurepas. As Superintendent of the Canal du Midi, Henri Pitot devoted much of his research to hydraulics and the study of fluids. The result of this expertise, this work established itself for many years as the standard reference treatise on the scientific principles of navigation.
