GAVARNI (Sulpice-Guillaume Chevalier, known as). *La Mode*. A Review of Fashions, A Gallery of Manners, An Album of the Salons. Volume Four. Paris, 25 Rue du Helder, 1830. In-8 Bradel-bound in the publisher’s printed cardboard. Worn joints, yellowed spine. 25 engraved plates inserted separately, including 20 fashion plates by GAVARNI (19 in colour and 1 in black and white), and 2 colour fashion plates for *Les Modes de Paris*. A few very small foxing spots. Sulpice-Guillaume Chevallier made a name for himself at the 1829 Salon by submitting a watercolour inspired by Gavarnie (Pyrenees). Émile de Girardin, having himself just founded *La Mode*, was keen to secure his services. This collaboration marked the beginning of his career as an illustrator. “The issue of ‘La Mode’ belonging to the collection of Mr Lucien Layus and exhibited at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition (Class 13) is this one.
