Manners and customs, characters and portraits of the inhabitants of Paris; a comprehensive picture of their private, public, political, artistic, literary and industrial lives, etc., etc. Paris, available from leading booksellers, undated [1850]. 2 parts in 1 vol., large 8vo, [4]-LXXX-160 pp. (with a gap in pagination from 6 to 41); 2 ff. (half-title and title page), pp. 161–357, 1 f. (table of contents), half-green morocco, smooth spine decorated with a beautiful gilded Romantic design and the title in gold (contemporary binding). Ex-libris J.M. This volume marks the reissue of the second volume of *Le Diable à Paris*, the famous romantic illustrated work first published in 1846. It is preceded by a ‘Geography of Paris’ by Théophile Lavallée; the following texts are by Balzac, Eugène Sue, George Sand, P.J. Stahl, Alphonse Karr, Henry Monnier, Octave Feuillet, Stendahl (sic), etc. The illustrations consist of numerous captioned engravings from Gavarni’s series *Les Gens de Paris*, other engravings from Bertall’s series *Paris comique* and *Panthéon du Diable à Paris*, and views by Champin, Bertrand, d’Aubigny and Français.
