Description
PHILIPON (Charles) & DORÉ (Gustave). Musée Français-Anglais. A monthly illustrated journal edited by Ch. PHILIPPON. Paris, 1855–1860. Large folio, green half-shagreen, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Binding worn, scuffed, head and foot caps damaged, joints partly split. Interior in good condition. A very rare complete collection (72 issues) of this richly illustrated journal, featuring work by Gustave Doré, amongst others. Originally a supplement to the *Journal pour rire* and the *Journal amusant*, the journal changed its title in 1858 to *Le Musée français* (issues 37 to 72). Launched on both sides of the Channel at the height of the Crimean War, the magazine initially reflected the widespread campaign of caricatures directed against the Russians. Above all, it served to disseminate Gustave Doré’s numerous illustrations, in which he experimented with various subjects – genre scenes, historical episodes and religious subjects – which he would later develop in his paintings. (Vicaire, V, 1232.)
