Description
TRAVIÈS (Charles). [Mayeux.] n.p., n.d.
In-12 (16 x 11.5 cm) comprising 46 plates of black-and-white caricatures, green half-maroquin, smooth spine with gold thread, gilt title (contemporary binding).
A rare collection by Charles-Joseph Traviès de Villers, known as Traviès (1804–1859), painter, illustrator and, above all, caricaturist. A contributor to *La Caricature* and *Le Charivari*, in 1832 he created the famous character of Mayeux, a caricature of the bourgeoisie under Louis-Philippe I. Following the restrictions imposed on the press in 1835, he devoted himself mainly to scenes of popular life and, in particular, illustrated several works by Honoré de Balzac.
