Description
ASSOLANT (A.). The Wonderful but True Adventures of Captain Corcoran. Fourth / Second edition. Illustrated with 25 woodcuts by A. de Neuville. Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1876/1869. 2 in-12 volumes: 1 blank folio, 1 frontispiece, (4)-314-(1) pp. / 1 blank folio, 1 frontispiece, (4)-326-(1) pp. Red percaline, gilt edges. Covers from the ‘Bibliothèque rose illustrée’ series. A Breton – a sailor, of course – whom nothing and no one can frighten, sets off in search of a manuscript in an unspecified region of India, at the request of the Lyon Academy of Sciences. Aided by his formidable companion, Louison (a tigress!), he successfully completes his mission and takes the opportunity to sow discord amongst the English, punish traitors, marry a rajah’s daughter, and spread the seeds of democracy… A story brimming with verve, humour and panache by an author who is now largely forgotten. An endearing character and a staunch republican, Alfred Assolant possessed real talent, and the two novels he wrote for young people (Corcoran and François Buchamor) deserve to be rediscovered. Older editions are not very common.
