[Geographical game]. Geographical atlas. Paris, Maison Alph. Giroux, [c. 1855]. Varnished wooden box, dimensions 41.5 x 32.5 x 7.5 cm; lid inlaid with copper wire in a border, central ‘MG’ monogram within a gilded floral frame, lock (without key). The box contains eight jigsaw puzzle panels (36 x 28 cm). It features eight engraved and highlighted maps, mounted on wood and cut into jigsaw pieces: a world map divided into two hemispheres, France divided into 89 departments, Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America and Russia. These maps are taken from J. G. Barbié du Bocage’s Geographical Atlas. Inside the box is a label from Maison Giroux, the name of which is repeated and engraved on the upper part of the lock. There is a small tear in the Alaska section (map of North America). A luxurious set, typical of the products distributed by Maison Alphonse Giroux.
