Description
JOB & TREVOR HILL (Frederick). Washington. The Man of Action. With illustrations by Comte J. Onfroy de Breville JOB. New York and London, D. Appleton and Company, 1914. In-4 (21.5 x 28.3 cm), XVII-(1)-329 pp. Publisher’s cardboard binding. Almond-green percaline. Title in gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. First edition. First print run of Job’s 28 colour plates: a frontispiece, an illustrated title page, 16 full-page plates and 10 double-page plates mounted on canvas tabs; each page of text is framed by a large woodcut, printed in blue-grey: intertwined oak leaves and acorns, a drum, an American eagle, and crossed sabres. One of the rarest editions of *Job*, published exclusively in the United States; the book is set in a style between the ‘Bonaparte’ and ‘Napoleon’ types; the spirit of these compositions is reflected in the portrayal of this ‘Washington, Man of Action’. Oxidised gilt lettering on the spine, which shows some browning. Handwritten ‘ex dono’ on the first flyleaf.
